the process-Borders Holly & Marshmallow

Hi guys!
Here are some of my drawings and sketches for the Border's campaign. The idea is about a sweet relationship between a toy polar bear cub and a fairy named Marshmallow and Holly. It's a story about friendship, inspiration and enchantment.

They needed Holly to be youthful and sweet, and less mature--so they chose the one on the far left. I also drew numerous variations of dresses for her--and the "holly" dress fitted best for their color palette and also matched her name :)

Originally Marshmallow wasn't supposed to be a toy, but the idea that he magically came to life, just like Pinocchio, made the concept even more holiday-ish.

Bringing Marshmallow to life was a lot of fun-- he is like this really adorable playful puppy, except he's a bear. I love how he just got chubbier by the end.

And here are some photos inside the Borders store courtesy of Michael Campbell and Shelly --Thanks so much guys!

It was one of the most fun projects I had the opportunity to work on (so far), and the people were great. They also made actual Marshmallow plush toys!...Yes, I have one :P

The store manager was very cool and let me take as many photos as I wanted. With this amazing work on display it made Borders look like a wonderland. I bought the calendar book with the illustrations for each month. Great work Kei!

Congrats Kei and Bobby!
The designs are so adorable. My favourite illustration is the postage stamp on Marshmallow's nose! Very funny!

And it was cool meeting you, Kei, yesterday at the royal winter fair. I remember seeing some of your drawings up on the walls at school back when I was only in first year. They were really inspiring.

I was in Borders on the weekend and saw this campaign...amazing! The store was in Torrance and they said that they sold out of those plush bears in a couple of days. Way to go my friend. I grabbed a bunch of bookmarks for my kids.
Drove by it on my way to work in West LA aswell. I'm seeing it everywhere down here. Really awesome to know it was born and raised in Toronto by good ol' folks such as yerselves!
Congrats.
Kris.

I was at the mall today and didn't realize it had a Borders in it. Marshmallow and Holly were EVERYWHERE from spinning Holly to plushes. They did a great job with the marketing. I didn't have my camera with me today, but I put the camera in the car for the next trip.

Wonderful work. At times it feels like cartooning has gone the way of Design markers, pen and ink and Dr. Martin's Dyes. But the characters are truly wonderful!

Great work!

I saw your art for the first time in Borders recently. No one could tell me about it so I did some research online and eventually found you.

I LOVE your fairy and would love to get a print/wallpaper/SOMETHING of her to share with my brother (he's a huge fan of cute fairy art).

Is something like that possible?

I just love your marshmallow and Holly. I just went out and purchased one of the calendars and one of the toys. I tried getting some of the displays but they were promised already.

I would love to see some wallpapers of the drawings. I will keep checking back.

Thank you so much for these adorable little characters.

Happy Holidays to you!!
