The Schoolism Lakeouse is a unique and exciting opportunity for a handpicked group of four applicants to be trained by professional artists in the inspiring and stimulating lakeside environment of the Schoolism Lakehouse.
If selected, you and three other applicants will be invited to move into the Schoolism House in Sainte-Julienne, Quebec (just outside of Montreal, Canada), for 30 days. Once there, you will follow the training program designed by Imaginism Studios for our new artists. You will learn drawing, painting, and digital painting from our Senior Artist, Thierry Lafontaine and a special guest instructor. Past guests have included Nathan Fowkes, Bobby Chiu, Stephen Silver, and more!
The Schoolism Lakeouse is dedicated to the training of concept artists based on the principle of "Learning by Doing". For 30 intense days, you will live with Thierry and acquire the essential art skills, daily practices, and philosophies that lead to a successful career as a concept artist in today's industry.
The Schoolism Lakehouse Curriculum
At the Schoolism Lakehouse, you will spend a lot of time with your instructor, Thierry Lafontaine, to ensure you understand and absorb all the material being taught. Every day, you will get a lesson from Thierry, do art exercises, be assigned homework, and get feedback.
The Schoolism Lakehouse curriculum is divided into four parts:
- Light and Shadow
- Digital PAinting
- Acrylic Painting
longside the four parts curriculum, you will also get character design homework and lessons.
During your month at the Schoolism Lakehouse, you will greatly improve your speed, productivity, workflow, and ability to effectively communicate your ideas through drawing and painting.
The first part we will start with the fundamentals in order to build a strong foundation. You will learn how to use line, shape, and form to express solid structure.
Throughout the course, you will also get character design homework, lessons, and exercises.
Schedule: Every day you will get an art lesson and feedback on your homework. Under Thierry’s supervision, you will go through exercises designed to make sure that you understand the daily lesson. At the end of the exercises you will be assigned homework that will be due the next morning.
In the second part, you will learn how light and shadow interact on different objects and how they can be used to express form and solid structure. As your homework you will render photorealistic geometrical forms using only values.
Schedule: Like in part 1, every day you will get an art lesson and feedback on your homework. Under Thierry’s supervision, you will go through exercises designed to make sure that you understand the daily lesson. At the end of the exercises you will be assigned homework that will be due the next morning.
The third part will focus on two different subjects: digital painting and color theory. We will start by choosing some of the characters that you created in the first two weeks, and you will digitally render them in black and white. Afterwards, you will learn how to create harmonious color compositions. You will then choose one of your characters and color them.
Schedule: In part 3 the feedback that you will get will be a lot more extensive and cover most of the day. The lessons will be mixed with the feedback, and you will receive paintovers and demos on color theory and color harmony. Every day you will be assigned homework that will be due the next morning..
During the fourth and final part, you will learn how to transfer your digital painting skills to traditional media. You will take the character that you created digitally in Part 3 and and create an acrylic version of it.
Schedule: Part 4 will be the practical application of everything that you learned in the first three parts. You will continue to work on your acrylic painting under Thierry’s supervision, as you continue to receive painting demos and learn about the painting process. In this final week you will also get lessons and demos from the visiting guest artist, and spend time with them discussing art, having dinner, and doing extracurricular activities.
Every day you will be assigned a different objective to complete on your acrylic painting.
By the end of your time at the Schoolism Lakehouse, you will see, think, draw and paint in a completely different way. You will also leave with new artist friends from around the world and unforgettable memories.
